That doesn’t mean that you can’t go it alone, of course, and you don’t necessarily need a business partner when you do this. But you will probably find that there is a need for someone to help with some of the essential early work. Many entrepreneurs like to hire freelancers for a lot of this early work, but is this the best move for you?

Look For Entrepreneurial Freelancers

One way to approach this is to look out for some entrepreneurial freelancers who might be keen to help you out with starting up your business. They are more likely to put a lot of work into it, and it could be that having them on board really makes all the difference in the world. Of course, you might be hiring them in order to keep them around after things have got set up, or not – it could just be that you want to hire them for the early days only. It’s up to you, but you should stipulate it clearly in the contract.

That takes us on to the next point, which is an important thing to consider whenever you are working with freelancers, but especially at this early stage. You should always ensure you communicate clearly with freelancers – not only does this ensure that you are going to get exactly what you need done, but it is also going to mean that they feel more as though you are working with them in the way that they need you to. Communicate clearly, and you can expect the same in return from them.

Arranging Pay

A lot of people wonder what the process is when you are paying freelancers who are working for you in your business. There are many approaches to take, but the important thing is that you have budgeted for it at the beginning, so you know that you can actually afford to pay them as and when you need to. You might need to fill out a 1099-NEC form as a means of declaring what you have paid to your freelancers at the end of the tax year, so bear that in mind and don’t overlook it.


You will often hear people talking about non-disclosure agreements when working with a freelancer, but is this really going to be necessary for your operation? If you are due to be sharing any information with the freelancer which is important, sensitive or private, then you should consider getting them to sign an NDA. It just helps you to protect your business’ intellectual rights above all, and it helps to maintain a sense of trust between you too, which has been shown to actually improve the working relationship greatly. So that is one reason you might want to think about an NDA.
