4 Tips for Making Your Everyday Life Calmer and More Serene

Have you ever noticed how many people seem to constantly be stressed out, anxious, highly strung, and distracted in a wide variety of different ways?

Of course, there are certain things which inevitably happen to all of us over the course of our lives, that are bound to be stressful, and that can throw off our composure and present us with difficult situations that we hadn’t seen coming.

Sometimes, things aren’t going so well at work, or someone close to you has a personal emergency, or you come down with an illness.

Nonetheless, there’s a good argument to be made that life has become increasingly stressful and agitating for a large number of people over the last century or so, even as technology has become ever more sophisticated, and opportunities have tended to grow.

In order to enjoy a feeling of well-being and satisfaction in your everyday life, it’s necessary to find ways to make your life calmer and more serene, in general.

Here are a few tips for achieving that.

Take steps to reduce the amount of information “noise” you’re exposed to

The famous Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge is known for all sorts of incredible feats, including walking solo to the South Pole.

On his South Pole journey, his radio died early into the trip, leaving him in complete silence for the next 30 days or so.

For Kagge, this was a transformational experience in his life, and taught him a valuable lesson about the vital importance of “Silence.”

Recently, Kagge wrote a book entitled “Silence in the Age of Noise,” which promotes the idea that a sense of calm, completeness, well-being, and balance, can only be achieved when we allow ourselves regular moments of silence, away from the endless information “noise” we are exposed to on a daily basis.

If you’re constantly bombarding yourself with what’s happening on your social media feeds, with the latest news headlines, with celebrity gossip, and with all sorts of other things, it might do you a lot of good to take steps to reduce the noise and regain a bit of silence and stillness.

Use services that can help you to reduce the complexity you have to face, on a personal level

As the world has become increasingly complex, so too do we all now typically have to deal with highly complex processes and issues on a fairly regular basis.

Fortunately, there is a wide assortment of services out there that can help you to reduce the complexity you have to face, on a personal level, by either outsourcing the work to other people, or by at least presenting you with insights that you might have missed on your own.

If you are having issues with your insurance company, hiring a public adjuster could be a game changer. Likewise, if you’ve got serious computer troubles, it will often be far less stressful and far more straightforward to just get a professional to take a look.

Stop trying to do everything at once (create lists for future ambitions)

It’s all but impossible to maintain a sense of calm if you are constantly trying to do a hundred or more different things at the same time, and are frantically running back and forth, trying to figure out how to juggle all the different tasks you are trying to manage simultaneously.

Sooner or later, you need to take a deep breath and understand that it’s impossible – and pointless – to try and do everything at once. In fact, the more you overload yourself, the less likely you are to do well at any one particular thing, or in any one particular area.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you should give up on your dreams or anything like that. Instead, create lists for your future ambitions so that you can keep track of them, but make a point of only specifically tackling a handful at a time.

Take up practices such as meditation that can help to ground and centre you in the present moment

If you are frequently stressed, anxious, and overwhelmed, there’s a good chance that part of the problem is that you are simply not occupying the present moment enough – but are rather allowing yourself to become too caught up in fears for the future, and ruminations about the past.

It can make a huge difference to take up practices such as meditation that can help to ground and centre you in the present moment, at least to some degree.

Consider using meditation services such as Calm or Headspace for this purpose.
