Traveling nowadays is definitely not something that’s considered to be cheap, but that certainly doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to make your money stretch a bit farther when traveling, whether it’s through knowing where to find the great deals or just being a bit savvy when it comes to knowing some tricks of the trade.

If you’re looking to travel for less, then here are some of our top tips for the best ways to save money when traveling:

Of course, this list is certainly not extensive – there are so many ways to save money when traveling, but these are just some of the best ways we’ve tried.

Use hand luggage:

If you’ve recently flown, you’ll have noticed that most airlines are now charging for checked luggage, with the exception of long haul international flights. Not only are they charging, but the costs are pretty hefty and if you’re traveling as a family with two or more checked bags, then it can soon add up.

The best way to avoid this is by using hand luggage when possible since this is free on the majority of airlines and you get a pretty generous allowance of 10kg. Not only is traveling with hand luggage taking away some of the cost, but it’s less hassle and there’s no issues with waiting on luggage at the other end.

Travel by car:

Depending on where you’re traveling to and how many of you are going, you may get lucky and find great deals on flights, but then again, you may find it cheaper to use other modes of transportation, so it really does depend.

However, traveling by car can be a fun and relaxing experience since it’s a lot cheaper and you don’t have to worry about things like long lines and delays in airports.

One thing you should always have when traveling by car is insurance that protects you in case of any accidents that are the fault of others, which would cover you in the event of having to speak to a trial attorney.

Bring your own snacks:

Along with hotels, airports and train stations have some of the highest mark ups on products in the world, and although there are far more restrictions now as to what you’re allowed to take through security in airports these days, you can bring most food items as long as they don’t contain more than 100ml of liquids, so instead of spending $10 on a sandwich in the airport, save yourself some money and make your own.

Book separately:

Package deal offers take a lot of the hassle out of booking for many people because everything is included, often even the transfers from the airport to the hotel, but if you actually sit and break down the prices compared to booking everything separately, sometimes you’ll see that you’re going to be spending a good deal more just for the convenience, so if you want to save some money, then separate bookings can be a good way to go.
